Understanding Auto-Create Mobile Layout

Auto-Create Mobile Layout is a feature within Power BI that automatically generates a mobile-friendly version of your report. It analyzes your existing report layout and optimizes it for smaller screens commonly found on mobile devices. This includes adjusting the size and positioning of visuals, rearranging elements for better readability, and ensuring a seamless user experience.

How to open mobile layout view

After clicking on above-shown icon in power Bi, you will be able to see below tab

Automatic mobile layout creation

Selecting the auto-create mobile layout option creates a new, fully functional layout on the mobile layout canvas that includes the images from your report. The newly created, automatically generated layout will take the place of any existing layout on the canvas. The auto-create engine reads your report's desktop layout and creates a mobile layout based on the position, size, kind, and arrangement of the visuals it contains. It positions both visible and hidden images, so bookmarks that adjust a visual's visibility will also function in the mobile layout that is automatically generated.

Key Benefits

  1. Efficiency: With Auto-Create Mobile Layout, you no longer need to manually design separate layouts for mobile devices. This saves considerable time and effort, allowing you to focus on analyzing data rather than formatting reports.

  2. Consistency: Maintaining consistency across different devices is crucial for effective communication. By automatically generating mobile layouts, Power BI ensures that your reports look consistent regardless of the device used to access them.

  3. Accessibility: Mobile access to reports enables users to stay informed and make decisions on the go. Auto-Create Mobile Layout enhances accessibility by providing an optimized viewing experience tailored to mobile devices.

  4. User Experience: A well-designed mobile layout improves the overall user experience by presenting information in a clear and intuitive manner. This not only enhances usability but also increases engagement with your reports.

Best Practices

While Auto-Create Mobile Layout simplifies the process of optimizing reports for mobile viewing, adhering to best practices is essential to ensuring the best possible user experience:

  1. Simplify Visuals: Complex visuals may not translate well to smaller screens. Simplify visuals and focus on conveying key insights concisely.

  2. Prioritize Information: Prioritize the most important information for mobile users, ensuring that it is prominently displayed and easily accessible.

  3. Optimize for Touch Interaction: Consider the touch interface when designing mobile layouts. Use larger buttons and interactive elements to facilitate navigation and interaction.

  4. Test Across Devices: Test your mobile layout across different devices and screen sizes to ensure compatibility and usability.

Considerations and limitations

  • Tooltips are disabled on the mobile layout canvas; they're available when viewing in the mobile app, however.

  • Metric visuals aren't interactive on the mobile layout canvas.

  • Slicer selections made on the mobile layout canvas don't carry over when you switch to the web layout. Also, when you switch back from web layout to mobile layout, any slicer selections will come from the web layout. Likewise, when the report is published, any slicer selections will be those that were defined in web layout, regardless of whether the report is being viewed in the regular desktop-view or a mobile-optimized view.

  • The engine can't handle background images.

  • Too much overlaying is a challenge for the engine. It will do its best, but the result might not be optimal.

  • If there are too many images, not all of them might fit on the mobile layout canvas, in which case you'll still see unplaced visuals on the page visuals pane after choosing the auto create option.

Conclusion:

It is crucial to make sure reports are optimized for mobile viewing in this day and age, when mobile devices are almost everywhere. This procedure is made easier for users by Power BI's Auto-Create Mobile Layout tool, which makes it simple to create mobile-friendly versions of reports.
